The goal of this project was to make a Jewelry Saw adopting the principles of universal design. The user I wanted to include was a user who lacked grip power or flexibility in the wrist. So I designed it to form a grip that will help me move my wrist more flexibly and grip. Especially using a CNC machine, I cut a metal and fabricated an actual jewelry saw.

Research

Researches on ergonomical grip.

Summary
  • Problem: I tried cutting aluminum and steel using a jewelry saw. In particular, repeated work and hand-pressing power were used at the same time, which put strain on the wrist. It was a structure that could easily be tired for people with little grip strength.

  • Approach: The usual jewelry saw didn’t have an adjustable angle on the handle, so people have to hold it 90 angle, which is not the ideal position for the users to be comfortable. The saw doesn’t have additional handle that the users can hold if they are lack of the grasping power.

  • Design Direction: Flexible angle handle. Additional holding part on the saw.
